Note from artist:
In the "Art of Poetry" (c.10 B.C)., the Roman author Horace discusses the importance of altering reality and creating absurdity in art.
"Supposing a painter chose to put a human head on a horse's neck, or to spread feathers in the various colours over the limbs of several different creatures, or to make what in the upper part is a beautiful woman tail off into hideous fish: could you help laughing when he showed you his efforts?"
This image then comes from the 12th century transcriber of Horace's text, who included this illustration in the margins of the manuscript. (c.1175 -1200)
